Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

PCIT is a highly effective, evidence-based therapy designed to strengthen the parent–child relationship while reducing challenging behaviors. Through real time coaching and guided practice, caregivers learn practical tools to improve connection, communication, emotional regulation, and consistency at home.

WHO is PCIT For?

PCIT is designed for young children (typically ages 2–7) and their caregivers who are navigating big behaviors, big emotions, and strained parent–child dynamics.

It’s especially helpful for families experiencing:

  • Frequent tantrums, defiance, or aggression

  • Difficulty with listening, limits, or transitions

  • Power struggles or escalating behavior cycles

  • Emotional outbursts, anxiety, or dysregulation

  • A parent feeling exhausted, stuck, or unsure what will actually help

PCIT supports both the child and the caregiver through strengthening connection while building clear, confident leadership at home.

Session Details

PCIT sessions are active, supportive, and highly practical.
Rather than just talking about behaviors, we work in real time to practice new skills that immediately translate to home.

Sessions typically include:

  • A brief parent check-in and skill review

  • Live coaching with your child present (in-person or via secure setup)

  • Gentle guidance and feedback as you practice new interaction tools

  • Clear take-home strategies to use during the week

Program Structure

PCIT follows a clear, evidence-based structure designed to create lasting change:

  • 3 Phases of Treatment

    1. Relationship-Building Phase – strengthening connection, safety, and emotional regulation

    2. Skill-Building Phase – increasing cooperation, listening, and positive behavior

    3. Maintenance & Generalization – applying skills across settings and challenges

Format

  • PCIT can be done online or in person. Many families opt for a hybrid of both.

  • Time Commitment

    • Approximately 1 hour per week in session

    • 5 minutes a day of focused practice at home

  • Length of Treatment

    • Most families complete PCIT in 12–15 sessions

  • Progress is individualized
